Proper Smile: The idea

Buying material things often has a temporary
uplifting benefit. This was particularly
apparent during lockdown.

I decided to explore why people buy what
they buy – asking what the last thing was
that my friends and family bought on
Amazon that gave them a “proper smile”.

This was accompanied by a painting of poet,
Destiny Adeyemi, painted on Amazon
packaging, whose smile is incredibly
contagious.

A celebration of joie de vivre

In lockdown
It was the small things
That made me smile –

Sunny days.
A call from a friend
A walk with the “dog” to new neighbourhoods
Or parcels in the post

Proper Smile: Process

So what was the last thing my friends and family
bought that gave them a proper smile?
The responses were fun and intriguing:

1. A lilo for a mum longing for holidays
2. A hair airbrush for fabulous hair
3. The Tusk Tusk children’s book for a nephew
4. The Thief of Baghdad to reminisce and enjoy intimate
moments with loved ones
5. Some sexy lingerie
6. A clothing rail for a fashion designer
7. Tan-through swimwear

Mixed media, purchased on Amazon
